      Individual Advisement Session

      At NYU School of Professional Studies Tokyo we believe that learning is a journey. We need to understand your educational goals before helping you choose the best study path to take.

      The Individual Advisement Session is an opportunity to have a one-to-one meeting with a student adviser to discuss your learning goals, understand your current proficiency, and consider the best program of study for you.

      Individual Advisement Session Steps

      NYUSPS Tokyo holds Individual Advisement Sessions for the following steps below.

      Step 1: Counselling

      An experienced learning advisor will discuss your past English learning experience, your goals and the level of proficiency you hope to attain. We will explain the high academic quality you will find studying at NYUSPS Tokyo. Counselling will be provided in Japanese so there is no need to be be anxious about the session. Our advisors will help you create an individual learning plan to achieve your goals.

      Step 2: Level bands

      Level guidance will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. With your advisor's support, we will ensure that you have a clear understanding of our three level bands -Foundations, Intermediate and Advanced - and which band best reflects you as a learner. If necessary, an instructor may be asked to support in this process.

      Step 3: Proposed study plan

      Having confirmed your level, the advisor will recommend an appropriate study plan. Taking into account your learning objectives and iindividual needs, the advisor will provide a proposed study plan. Lastly, we will provide a quote reflecting your budget and schedule.

      Level BandBand description
      Foundations In a highly supportive classroom environment you will acquire the knowledge and skills to use the English that you previously learned in school for basic communication. You will improve your listening and speaking skills, review basic English grammar and sentence patterns, and boost your vocabulary and reading speed.
      Intermediate Designed for those with basic English-language skills, these English-only courses immerse you in media and reading materials including YouTube, newspapers, and short works of fiction. You will focus on the discussion of timely topics to build your English speaking and listening skills, as well as your vocabulary.
      Advanced Developed for those with strong English communication skills who want to improve their English for professional purposes, these English-only courses will help you to develop specialized vocabulary, express and support opinions clearly, discuss and debate current issues and business topics, negotiate effectively, and write detailed English business presentations.
